It is no secret that the British climate can be unpredictable. One minute it’s raining, and the next minute the sun is out in all its glory, making it difficult to know whether to wear a raincoat, jumper or summer dress just for a simple day out. For many, this ebb and flow of temperatures can mean that it’s difficult to know how much to heat, or not to heat, your home. For instance, especially as we are approaching late summer and early autumn, the temperatures are likely to cool, so drafty homes will feel chillier than others.
With this in mind, we have decided to collate together a quick (and easy) guide to maintaining your home’s temperature, without putting a strain on your pocket or on the environment.
Install and utilise a thermostat
If you weren’t aware, a thermostat is a great way to easily monitor and adjust your home’s temperature. According to OVO energy provider, the optimum temperature for the average UK home is 18 to 21 degrees; any higher or lower and there is a risk of cardiovascular and respiratory issues. However, it can be difficult to keep on top of your home’s temperature, especially if you are out and about for work and school. A thermostat can be easily adjusted whenever you are inside and we recommend turning it off or lowering the temperature when you are leaving the home, as no excess energy is wasted.
Keep layers handy
A personal tip rather than a plumbing one, always make sure that you have cosy blankets to wrap yourself in when the night gets cool, or a light summer duvet to throw on your bed in the midst of a surprise heatwave. This way, you can keep yourself cosy and cool without turning to the central heating.
Promote good air circulation
Newer builds are great for keeping you warm during the winter, but sometimes, in the midst of cloying summer temperatures, your home can suddenly feel like a sauna. As most British homes are ill-equipped without air conditioning, you need to simply turn to good old mother nature to promote good air circulation and keep your home feeling breezy. Make a concerted effort to open all doors and windows when you are in the home, and, on the days when it can feel like your home has the same surface temperature as the sun, why not install some fans?
Having good air circulation will also freshen up the living areas, as stale air can lead to stuffy odours, which isn’t ideal for messy teenage bedrooms.
