Nothing is quite as exciting, and equally daunting, as having a newborn or young baby. From the numerous late-night feeds to the middle of the day cuddles, it is a unique and intimate time for the whole family.
It is no secret that newborns and babies can find it hard to naturally regulate their temperature, and are far more sensitive to warm and cold environments. This is why it is vitally important to keep your baby at an optimum temperature at all times, especially as if they get too hot, there is a chance that they could have sudden infant death syndrome, also known as cot death.
With this in mind, we put together our top tips for keeping newborns and babies warm.
Sleeping
When designing your nursery, make sure to avoid placing the baby’s cot near radiators, direct sunlight, heaters and fires as this will mean they are more susceptible to temperature changes.
Purchase plenty of soft cotton baby grows and 2.5 tog sleepsuits with that can help your baby stay both warm and cool all night. If you are concerned that your baby is either too hot or too cold whilst they are asleep, you can check their temperature by gently placing your hand on their stomach. Add or remove light cotton blankets depending on the desired temperature, but don’t put a duvet on them.
Many modern inventions and innovations in baby products have created room thermometers, so you can easily check the temperature. The ideal temperature for a babies room should be between 16 to 20 degrees.
Going outside
Whether you want a brisk morning walk on a bright chilly day or you are taking your baby to the supermarket, make sure to leave plenty of time to get your baby dressed and also pack together extra clothes and items too like booties and hats.
Babies lose more heat through their heads, so make sure to put a hat on them when it is cold, but also don’t do this when it is warm as this will help them regulate their body temperature. Make sure to remove any excess layers when you are going inside to either supermarkets or the home as this will help reduce the chance of them overheating.
