If your boiler has finally packed up and you’re in need of a new one, the world of boilers can seem overwhelming- especially as it’s such a big and important investment. There are plenty of factors to consider such as the size of your property, the number of showers and even the water pressure in your area.
To help you in your decision this blog will go over the most common types of boilers and how they could benefit your home.
System boilers
Although these require a hot water cylinder, the majority of the other components are built internally making it more compact than a regular boiler. Hot water is pumped through the radiators and hot water cylinder delivering a faster response and lower running costs.
Pros:
● Compact design
● Run efficiently
● Great for homes that have more than one bathroom
Cons:
● Need enough space for the cylinder
● There is a wait time for water to be heated
Combi boilers
Combi boilers are often considered the most cost-effective boiler for your home and account for over half of all domestic boilers installed in the UK each year. They control both hot water and heating, eliminating the need for water tanks or cylinders.
Pros:
● Easier to maintain as there is less pipework
● Great for flats or houses with limited space
● Installations tend to be cheaper
● Generally cleaner as water is piped directly from the mains and not kept in a tank where debris can build up
Cons:
● May not be suitable for larger homes that need to run several baths or showers at once
● There’s no back up immersion heater so no hot water means no heating
Conventional boilers
This type of boiler is usually found in older homes but can still be a great choice for modern homes with a high demand. They use two tanks consisting of a hot water cylinder and cold water tank, that can send water to multiple taps without loss of pressure of weaker flow.
Pros:
● They will still work even with low pressure
● Compatible with older heating systems
● Hot water still works well even if multiple sources are using it
Cons:
● You’ll need space for the hot and cold tanks
● Hot water isn’t on demand and needs to be heated in advance
● Can be more expensive to run
● Only provide as much hot water as can be held in the tank
